5G: prospects for the near future

What is happening now with the new generation of communication, in the material "Lenta.ru"

Real Fiction The fifth generation of mobile communication has high expectations. First of all, a new generation network is needed for corporations, hospitals, and entire economic systems. Formally, it may seem that the "five" is just an improved version of the previous four options, but in reality, everything is not so obvious.

Because of the high bandwidth and data transfer speed, this method of communication can simplify the work of miners and drivers, doctors and programmers. Due to the fact that the signal is transmitted tens of times faster, the actions in the network will be as similar to real life as possible. For comparison: in the usual LTE data transfer speed - from 100 megabits to 1 gigabit per second, in the new version these indicators will be tens times more.

In addition to the obvious high speed of downloading social networks 5G, as promised by experts, promises to keep battery power on gadgets and re-open the network. That is, even in the taiga, where earlier on the smartphone could barely see the E icon, you can safely conduct a phone conversation through the messenger. Although, perhaps, and messengers will not be needed: 5G will make possible communication in the format device-to-device (from device to device).

5G in China The largest experimental network 5G was first built in China a year ago - then the maximum transfer rate was 7 gigabits per second. The first stage of the tests was completed by the fact that experts proved the reality of the technology. The project managed to attract such IT-giants as Intel, Huawei, Nokia, and ZTE. The development was led by China Mobile Communication Corporation, the world's largest mobile phone operator. The general director of this company simultaneously occupies the leading position in the group for the promotion of 5G technology in the government of the PRC.

The country with the largest number of Internet and mobile subscribers in the world is interested in implementing high technologies not only for the convenience of subscribers, but also for strengthening the surveillance system inside the "golden shield" (the "great Chinese firewall"). The face recognition technology, which is now actively tested in China, can be completely re-bounded, as the development of 5G will lead to the emergence of high-speed data transfer in real time.

The pressure of Chinese corporations and the government could not but arouse suspicions among the heads of other states. Two weeks ago, the media reported the leakage of documents from the White House: the administration of President Trump stipulates the possibility of protection from China through the national American network of 5G. According to journalists, presidential security officers are concerned about the dominant position of China in the information environment. The experts offered the head of state two possible solutions to the problem: either one state network, or the launch of several networks by communication providers. Obviously, Americans are unlikely to support the nationalization of networks, but it is problematic to negotiate with providers. According to rumors, the White House tends to implement a single network, despite the fact that it can become a multi-year project. In this case, local operators, such as AT & T, T-Mobile and Verizon, will have to provide subscribers with access to a network leased from the government.

However, some Americans consider the haste with the introduction of 5G part of the conspiracy theory: supporters of ultra-right movements are confident that Google is trying to establish a monopoly on the Internet of a new generation and enslave all US residents, and then the whole world.

Race for the "five" in a technologically oriented world has become a matter of honor for many countries. The development and testing is not only carried out by research laboratories, but also by equipment suppliers and mobile operators. Some boast of their achievements, while others carefully guard the secret. For example, a few years ago, sources in the Silicon Valley reported that Google in a secret environment checks the 5G network on drones. A manufacturer of chipsets Qualcomm a few days ago promised that within a year will provide equipment for the "five" for eleven brands of smartphones, and even showed their achievements. Among the named - the future flagships from ASUS, HMD (Nokia), HTC, LG, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE and many others.

Commercial tests are conducted at major sporting events, where equipment with a large concentration of fans can show its resilience. Now the company Intel helps the administration of South Korean Pyeongchang in the work of test technologies at the Winter Olympics. The recent Superbowl (the final of the championship of the National Football League of the USA) was also touched by this fever: the supernova system VR was activated there: the spectator could independently choose a camera for watching the broadcast.

The Russian "big four" mobile operators last year requested in Roskomnadzor frequencies for the experiment on the use of technology at the World Cup, which will be held in Russia in 2018. Within the framework of the summer mundialia, communication operators will establish a common antenna system at each of the eleven stadiums. All the infrastructure they provide at their own expense. Last year, Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov estimated this project at four billion rubles. Experimental testing of 5G communication will be conducted directly during the events.

According to the head of the supervisory agency Alexander Zharov, these tests will help to understand the amount of investment needed for the development of technology. However, the operators have enough financial concerns and in addition to following the progress - for example, the implementation of the law of Yarovaya. A year and a half ago, experts expressed the opinion that the huge costs of implementing new requirements will affect the dynamics of the development of 4G networks and will seriously slow down the introduction of 5G technology.

At the same time, the enthusiasm of domestic operators can be envied: the signal with the best indicator was first received in Russia. The first test tests were conducted by MegaFon in the summer of 2016, and several months later, MTS followed suit. Then the data transfer rate was not high, but this precedent was valuable for its uniqueness. And already in June 2017, "MegaFon" for the first time set a world record: on the air, the transfer rate of mobile data on technology 5G reached 35 gigabits per second. Then one of the company's employees in glasses of virtual reality plunged into the simulator of automobile driving, and the image from the gadget was broadcast on the screen.

Despite the fact that the world expects the introduction of new technology by 2020, and the mayor of Moscow is already ready by this time to turn Moscow into a "5G city", standards for this type of communication have not yet been developed. Dmitry Medvedev recently said that he "in general is more or less clear how this is going to develop now" and called for speeding up with the definition of the frequency range that could be offered to telecom operators. He also mentioned the need for new technologies in the fields of education, medicine and recreation on his page in VKontakte. Given that the free frequencies in Russia have been tense recently, and they have to be redeemed through an electronic auction, it is not yet clear how this problem will be resolved.

To whom, why Obviously, the capabilities of 5G technology can potentially change a lot in everyday life. Its capacity is sufficient for the development of the Internet of things, which will replace people where it is necessary: for example, in harmful industries. Switzerland has already begun the development of an underground transportation and logistics system built on the Internet of Things. According to the idea of the creators, the wagons working on solar energy will allow to quickly transport cargo between cities, and small unmanned carriages will be able to deliver the parcels directly to the addressee from warehouses. According to experts' forecasts, this will reduce the load on motorways by almost half.

HHigh-speed data transmission can potentially help in the robotization of educational and health services. Due to the minimum signal delay, the automated mechanism can not only examine the patient instead of the therapist but also perform the operation under the remote patronage of a surgeon located in another city or another country. In general, the remote presence and management of the robot can be useful not only in the provision of assistance, but also in communication.

"Five" can bring closer futuristic future, familiar to us from the movies. Recent tests of 5G for robots indicate that they can not only move quickly, but also be automatically integrated into the flow, and also go to columns with a minimum distance (less than a meter). That is, mobile communication is potentially able to solve the problem of traffic jams.

The obvious way to use the updated technology is entertainment, and the other day Nokia has already tested 5G in this area. In the experiment on the game in Overwatch, the network showed incredible speed and complete absence of delays. For the whole industry, this can be a new stage in development: from high-speed communication for e-sports to the development of new games with virtual or augmented reality.

Thus, equipment for the introduction of technology has long been ready and actively used. The request from users to speed up the connection appears every ten years - simultaneously with the appearance of a new standard. The offensive of a high-tech future has been expected for a long time, the matter is behind the actual development of standards for a new connection and the allocation of resources for its implementation.
